Some authors, like me, always write scenes in order. Although now agented, Wool by Hugh Howey is just one of thousands of examples of a great indie talent who rose to fame-on his own. They have to take on huge challenges from start to finish. The general public, the readers who are not writers, don’t realize that indie authors actually work harder than well-established authors to market their books-they are more self-reliant. I have read some wonderful books by indies whose writing talents are just as good as some of the well known authors of today. What do you think some of the greatest misconceptions about indie authors are?Ī big misconception is that indie authors are not as talented as authors who have agents or large publishing houses backing them. Following a long career in advertising and marketing, which included owning her own agency and later becoming director of marketing and creative services for a well-known party goods manufacturer, she now indulges in her love of writing-full time. Rosary McQuestion was born in Brooklyn, New York, grew up in Wisconsin, and she currently lives in Michigan with her husband and their three cats. Pros: While last year’s The New Kid brought to light microaggressions against kids of color at an elite mostly-white prep school, this book features much more blatant racism from students, teachers, and administrators. Trey, Donte, and a brother and sister from the club form a fencing team, and their participation in the Massachusetts regional championships bring the story to a satisfying conclusion. To his surprise, he ends up excelling at fencing, and his love of the sport eventually eclipses his desire for revenge. Donte’s worst enemy at Middlefield is the star of the fencing team, so he decides to seek out the coach to train him. It’s during this suspension that he finds out about a former Olympic fencer who works at a Boys and Girls Club in Boston. After being unjustly accused by a teacher, Donte winds up being arrested and sent to jail before being suspended for a week. Summary: Donte wishes he could be less visible, like his lighter-skinned older brother, Trey, but his dark skin makes him stand out at the elite Middlefield Prep in the suburbs of Boston.
